Her laughter twinkled in tune with her dress; he couldn't help but smile with her, despite a frown on Susan's face. But Merrilyn's smile remained strong. 

"I'd forgotten how absolutely hilarious your stories are," Merri said. 

"A real hoot," Susan replied. He glanced at her but Merri ignored her. 

"Well, I'm glad I made you laugh at any rate," he said, clearing his throat. "I can't remember the last time I made Susan laugh." 

"God forbid I have more serious matters," Susan said, quietly.
